Keeping Your Home Cool during the Sweltering, Summer Months

AC Repairs That Will Prepare Your Home for Summer Heatwaves

by Anthony Graves

During the hot summer weather, heatwaves can cause your home to quickly feel like a hot, humid sauna. Therefore, you want to get a head start on nature and have AC repairs done now. Some of the work that needs to be done is common maintenance, but there are also repairs that occasionally need to be done before you start using your AC. The following tips will help you deal with these AC repairs before summer is here and your home becomes a sauna:

1. Checking Your Ductwork for Damage

Start evaluating your AC for problems by checking the ductwork. Areas with protected ductwork inside walls or other enclosed cavities aren't usually where you'll find problems. The problem is usually with ducts in attics, crawl spaces, and unfinished areas. Inspect these exposed ducts for damage and have them repaired before you start using your AC.

2. Turning the Main AC Power on and Checking the Condensing Unit for Damage

The AC condensing unit outside your home may have a main power switch near it. This switch is usually in its own box and may have been turned off last fall. Turn the power back on to the AC and inspect the condensing unit for signs of damage from winter weather and debris that may have fallen in during the cold fall and winter months. If there is any damage to the condensing unit, it will need to be repaired.

3. Turning Down the Thermostat and Checking the Air Conditioning for Noises

The AC may not come on if the temperature outside is too low. Therefore, you will want to turn the settings on the thermostat down until it comes on. When the AC is on, listen for unusual noises inside your home, and check the unit outside to see if it is making noise that may mean you need to have repairs done before summer gets here.

4. Checking the Condensation Drain Lines for Dirt

Lastly, you want to check the AC for leaks and damage to the condensation lines and drains. If the condensation lines are dirty, ask an AC repair service about cleaning them to prevent freezing during summer heatwaves. In addition, you may want to have the compressor checked for leaks and have any repairs done before the weather changes.

These are some tips to help you deal with the weather and problems that can cause your home to be too warm. If you need help with repairs before the summer weather gets here, contact an AC repair service to have these things done before you crank up your cooling.
